Chicago Sprints Regatta
August 14-16, 2020
Since 1910, Lincoln Park Boat Club has hosted competitive rowing regattas at the Lincoln Park lagoon and for the last 40 years, those competitions have centered on the Annual Chicago Sprints Regatta.
The Chicago Sprints is one of the largest competitive regattas in the region, drawing junior, collegiate and masters athletes from throughout the Midwest. The regatta regularly hosts more than 1,000 athletes, fielding entries from more than 25 clubs drawing from states across the country. It is attended by hundreds of spectators who line the 1000-meter course situated between Lake Shore Drive and the Lincoln Park Zoo. The Chicago Sprints features 1,000-meter, side-by-side, Henley-style racing. Recently, the Chicago Sprints was expanded to three days of racing.
Given the format of the event, there are a limited number of races we can hold each day and thus we must limit the number of entries in each event. LPBC appreciates our participants and works hard to accommodate as many rowers/events as possible.
Updates on COVID-19
After much consideration and discussion, Lincoln Park Boat Club has made the necessary decision to postpone the 40th Annual Chicago Sprints until August 14-16, 2020.
Our regatta committee is regularly evaluating the situation, along with the guidelines set by the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago, and will continue to make decisions that put the health and safety of our competitors, volunteers, and spectators first.
That may ultimately mean delaying the regatta until further and/or revising the format of racing to limit the number of individuals and allow for social distancing (i.e. only small boats).
Our goal is to be able to provide a fun and safe competition and we’re exploring every avenue to make that possible. We will keep you updated as we have further information and as new decisions regarding the regatta are made.
If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please see our RegattaCentral page for detailed registration information including dates and deadlines.
We’re expecting this year’s regatta to be in high demand, just like in years past. The total entries to the regatta will be capped at around 400 boats (precise number will be determined based on the schedule and entries). In order to secure an entry, we encourage crews to enter as early as possible. If an event is full, you can still join the waitlist and you’ll be notified as soon as a spot opens up. Credit card payment directly through Regatta Central is required, although exceptions for check payment will be made on a case-by-case basis.
After the initial entry deadline, the Regatta Committee will add waitlisted crews to increase the capacity of key events where demand is highest, such as 4+ and 8+, and 2x. To facilitate this process, any unpaid entries will be scratched and replaced with waitlisted crews in the order that payment is received.
Please only enter and pay for crews which you know will be racing. Any crew which scratches after the entry deadline, will forfeit their entry fee in full.
Boat rental is available! Please email email@example.com with the subject “Sprints Boat Rentals” for further details.
There is no grilling in the park without a Chicago Park District issued permit, but vendors will be on site and a few easy food options are within a 15-20 minute walk.
Drone use is prohibited due to local regulations.
